UT Mural in Hamblen County
Hamblen County, TN

Talbott

Barn

The 35th mural in the campaign was added in January 2023 along W Andrew Johnson Highway in Hamblen County and is visible to an estimated 21,209 travelers a day. For property owner Shannon Greene, the mural reflects his pride for both UT and the state.

“I clearly have a preference, and it’s Tennessee,” says Greene. “I’ve been all over the world, but I’m always going to call this state home. I hope this mural encourages the same for our young people.”

Greene, who studied horticulture at UT but ended his education a semester early to start life as a newlywed, owns and operates ABG Caulking & Waterproofing of Morristown, Inc. While his work has taken him to universities across the southeast, he says those visits have only reinforced his appreciation for UT.

Greene hopes that the 54-foot-wide mural painted on the side of his  barn showcases to Hamblen County students that they don’t need to leave the state to have a great educational experience.

Painting a 40-foot mural on a metal grain bin in 90-degree heat calls for a special type of artist.
